OUR BACKGROUND
We are a family based stud located in the beautiful West Gippsland area of Victoria.
We are dedicated to the Shire horse. Our family was originally from a farming background that used heavy horses.
Times have moved on, however, we believe the Horse to be the most noble of all farm animals and the Shire to be the most magnificent of the species.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
At Southern Cross Shires we constantly strive to provide excellent service to our clients in every area.
From the first point of contact right through to help and advise with pregnancies and foals, we take great pride in providing the best possible service to you. With the technology advances available through frozen semen, our competition is the world, and so it is our goal to bring the best Shire genetics in the world to you.
Our breeding program aims to produce horses of exceptional quality, with natural talent to match the best in the heavy horse world. It is vital that we keep improving the standard of horses produced through each generation, to ensure our Australian bred shires are both competitive here and overseas.
OUR IMPORTS
Breeding quality horses can only be achieved through quality parents. Both the sire and the dam need generations of proven bloodlines behind them. Their type, movement, temperament and trainability are also vitally important in determining how their offspring are likely to perform.
Our foundation broodmares carry the proven bloodlines of many of the great shires of the past. Over the last few years have been importing mares from the United Kingdom carrying the bloodlines of some of the world’s highest regarded Shires.
These mares have been incorporated into our breeding program and bred to the best Shire stallions using natural service and frozen semen from leading United Kingdom Shire stallions.
Quality and not quantity is our focus and is paramount to the continual improvement of the Shire breed in Australia.

VISITORS
We welcome visitors to our beautiful West Gippsland property which is ideal for breeding Shire horses.
We have approximately 20 Shires and a number of horse drawn lorries and two wheeled vehicles for you to inspect.
